Argentinian Teresa and Gustavo Bolotin got inspired by the Kabbalah religious philosophy to set-up their their contemporary company Jeans Makers (read their pledge in Spanish, on their website). "Vive La Révolution Spirituelle"

Did you know that the world's first public 'idealistic' broadcasting association was started back in 2005, in our country of origin: the Netherlands?!

Funny it is indeed, an it's even more than that, while their programs successfully strive to make people more aware of their routines in consumption and daily lifestyle! And that's not done in a way you would fear of!

Instead, their attention on social subjects, the rights of people, animals and on the antagonism between prosperity and poverty in the world, is spread in a contemporary & innovative way! They encourage the dialogue amongst a growing audience!

Some while ago, they did a field-research on their TV Lifestyle Magazine 'LLinke Soep', to find out how many people actually have organic cotton clothes hanging in their closets.

Oops, the results that stayed way below the expectations, were certainly a bummer. But the brand name Kuyichi was dropped several times by the Dutch consumers, showing their respect for the mission of the brand.

And their responds were pretty clear: Kuyichi is well-known for it's conscious approach to modern expectations of socially aware consumers! That's a clear statement, which makes us very proud!

And nope, ours aren't recycled from durable materials. Every one has it's own specialism

Still, we encourage every initiative that uses recycled goods. It's another sustainable way to help the environment, while not compromising to design. And every product deservers a second life!

Now we thought of showing you some of the nicest examples that we've come across lately. Treehugger's portal website is a good place to find independent critics on the goods, so help yourself and order one of these trendy bags, that would suit your Kuyichi_conscious_style to the best!

Let's start with the classic: everyone knows these rusty bags from the Swiss brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag. While the brothers' kitchen window looked out on the Zürich truck-route, back in 1993 the idea was born to start making custom messenger bags out of 100.000-mile truck tarpaulins, as it's such a robust material. Their bags are put together from those disbanded tarps, with recycled bike tubes (for the piping) and recycled seatbelts. Every bag is unique. You can even build your own bag online! Oh, and their facility in Tunisia employs handicapped people.

Another robust and good-looking example are the bags of ReSails. They create style bags from recycled sailcloth!

What makes the sail bags extra special is that the tags reveal the type of vessel the sail once served and the seas it traversed. Cool even for non-sailors. In addition to “the original recycled sail bag,” you can also find belts, wallets and dog collars.

Since the trend was set, amongst others by the Swiss Freitag-brothers, many more alternatives have loaded the market, all from recycled goods! What about trendy consumer bags made from disbanded advertising banners, billboards, recycled rubber from Seattle?!

And then there is Ragbags, a Dutch initiative to produce fashionable products made from recycled plastic bags collected by «ragpickers» in the slums of New Delhi! Ragbag® won the 2006 European Business Award for the Environment!

Another major brand in fashion out there, well-known for it's collection of durable shoes & outdoors wear, is shifting to a much more sustainable production process, since a while now.

This time, it's Timberland we like to congratulate with their recently launched Green Index label for their footwear line. The Green Index shows exactly what impact the production of your new pair of shoes has to the environment. It's a system we are more used to from food nutrition labels, rather than a shoes factory!

Today, only two shoes are being rated by the Green Index, but by 2009 all footwear (and clothes) should be labelled. So, thumbs-up for Timberland! As we congratulate every positive initiative rolled out, to make us all more aware of what we buy, and why.

Last month, their new Green Index already won it's first award: the Backpacker Magazines’ 2007 Editors' Choice Green Award. In a comment on the reward, Timberland said: “Our hope is that other like-minded companies will join us in developing an industry-wide index for comparing the environmental impacts of our design choices and we also hope to inspire consumers to ask questions, and make informed decisions about their purchases.”

And it's not only the Green Index, that shows their aims for a better world. Yet Timberland operates with a newly adopted slogan: “Make it better”.

This points out to their mission and aims for socially and environmentally sound improvements, rolled out in the areas they have people working. With a total global workforce of about 5.500 employees, that means a lot to local & global society!

Although not shouted out loud, it's worth mentioning as well, what howies (another sustainable company, in skatewear fashion) writes on their website about their newly wed joint venture with Timberland as stakeholder!

David, co-founder of howies tells us on his website: “So what will Timberland mean for howies? Well, it will help us make better and lower impact products, to give a better service and to do more good as we go about our business. Those are our rainbows to chase. They always will be.”

The real motives for howies, to team-up with Timberland, are their improvements so far:

1.they have made commitment for carbon neutrality by 2010
2.60% of the energy for their distribution center in California comes from solar power
3.their European distribution center is powered by 100% renewable energy
4.they are one of the first companies in the world to have developed ingredients labels on every box of shoes to increase environmental transparency to help customers make more informed choices
5.the Green Index hangtag to provide a product-specific rating of select environmental factors on five shoes this Spring
6.they give employees 40 hours of paid time-off to serve in their communities.
7.they were voted one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For by Working Mother magazine.
8.they have pledged to plant a million trees around the world.
9.they issue a CSR Report and recently launched their first facility-level sustainability report for their Dominican Republic Factory

This really is stuff to be proud of.
