Culture Couture

Till the 26th of June you can see the different interpretations of young prospective designers of Antwerp’s Academy of Fine Arts. Together with the Tropenmuseum the students show in this exhibition how authentic costumes from different cultures can inspire new, contemporary couture.

Well known designers such as Dries van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester and Walter van Beirendonck put Antwerp on the map as a center of fashion in the 1980s. Now it's up to these three young and promising international designers:

Manon Kündig (Switzerland)
Collection: Der hobuspöönig – Blowjob

Tabitha Osler (United States)
Collection: Red wood nation woman - Burning bush

  •  Wali Mohammed Barrech (Bosnia Herzegovina)
Collection: Feredja Burka Mostar – Reset

Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen, one of the most striking designers of this moment, is showing her first large-scale solo exhibition at Groninger Museum from the 24th of March on. Next to her exhibition Iris is also launching her first book which gives an great overview of her work , 2008 up to the present.

Iris van Herpen, who in 2011 became a member of the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, is renowned for her remarkable outfits in which she combines traditional craftsmanship and zealous handwork. She combines innovative techniques such as rapid prototyping and radical material choices such as processed leather sorts, synthetic boat rigging and the whalebones of children’s umbrellas.

Van Herpen’s work harmonizes with an important field of interest in the Groninger Museum, namely, the interface of art, design and fashion. In this framework, the Groninger Museum has already held presentations on the work of designers such as Comme des Garçons, Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan.  Till the 6th of May also Azzedine Alaïa is presenting his creations in the exhibition entitled Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century. The 71 year old Alaïa is one of the last major couturiers still active. The exhibition is a follow-on to the overview of his work shown in the Groninger Museum in 1998, which was subsequently displayed at the Brant Foundation in New York in 2002.
